OAKLAND — Habitat for Humanity East Bay will kick off its 20th anniversary celebration with an Earth Day build-a-thon beginning Friday. Spanning only four days, the event will lay the foundation for six new environmentally sustainable homes priced at below market- rate.
“This is one of the only opportunities in the Bay Area for low- income families to achieve homeownership,” said Janice Jensen, executive director for Habitat for Humanity East Bay.
Six families will secure the promise of homeownership by picking up a hammer and saw and getting dirty to build their dream home.
But they have help.
The 17th annual build-a-thon will draw a host of volunteers, youth groups and corporations to the Edes Avenue development in East Oakland, to aid in the construction efforts.
“A build-a-thon is like a walk-a-thon or a bike-a-thon, volunteers raise money to help us with the cost of building materials for the homes,” Jensen said.
The fundraising event asks participants to raise $200 per day. But most people, with the help of their families, co-workers and friends give much more than that, she said.
Once littered with car parts and poisoned with toxic chemicals from an auto salvage yard, Habitat for Humanity is in the midst of transforming the 2-acre site into community housing for 54 families, hopefully by December.
Homes completed last year will give volunteers and onlookers the chance to see what they’re helping to create.
The new homes are certified by the green building rating system, LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
