The Arcade can be bad for your health Stag and Cowes Sad tidings

0 Comments | Evening News (Edinburgh, Scotland), April 21, 2008

Byline: John Gibson

FILTHY. Mucky. Yuch. Walk at your peril through the North Bridge Arcade of retailers (one’s even a cafe with tables outside its door) linking the bridge with Cockburn Street. The world, including Environmental Health, is passing it by.

God knows – and I wish He’d care – when this once-pleasurable walkway’s marble-ish surface last saw detergent and water. The mass of chewing gum has congealed for so long, it’s now white-to-jet black. Rubbish is strewn the day long and nobody seems to sweep up one week to the other.

In short, nobody cares. And you don’t read about this in guide book Edinburgh. Aw the hell with it, darling! What’s for the tea and let’s get on with life.

Greet the interviewer by name. Sit only after they sit down.

4. Offer a copy of your resume. Do not assume they remembered to bring it with them.

5. Answer questions precisely. Do not ramble on. Make eye contact. If you need clarification, ask for it. It there are multiple interviewers at one time, make eye contact with the one who asked the question.

6. Be prepared to ask several questions. These should be based on research you have done about the company, business or organization. They should be specific and not ?fluff ball? questions.

7. Do ask for the selection process time line. This is the key for following up your thank you note (see below) with a phone call.

8. Stand when the interviewer stands at the end.

What they don?t

What they don?t realize is that the whole process is not as complex as they might think. Anyone of them can learn to do the same thing as long as they apply themselves to the situation.

At one time, I did not even know how to turn on a computer. The very first time I saw what HTML looked like I was stunned. How could I learn to do that was the question on my mind because it look like something only geeks could do.

But I was wrong. Most persons working online are plain ordinary people. They just saw an opportunity and decided to go after it.

32 years of caring

32 years of caring

0 Comments | Roanoke Times & World News, Jul 16, 2010 | by JoAnne Poindexter

Leila White is older than most of the patients she tends to at Woodhaven Nursing Home in Montvale.

“Some of them call me ‘Grandma,’ and that’s all right,” said White, who turned 84 on July 4.

White, a certified nursing assistant, has the longest tenure of any employee at Woodhaven, which celebrated 50 years of providing nursing home care July 3.

For 32 years, White, a former baby sitter, has been a companion to, bathed and fed Woodhaven residents who primarily have dementia- related and chronic illnesses. She came to work when Patricia McCown Zax, a registered nurse, was operating the home that her parents started.

Zax grew up mowing the lawn and cleaning around Woodhaven, which was run by their father, Dr. John McCown, a Roanoke family doctor, and her mother, Virginia. The facility initially was an addition to a single-family house that was built in 1929 for a Norfolk and Western Railway executive.

The McCown family, including sons-in-law and John McCown’s sister and brother-in-law, operated the home until David Graves bought it in 1993.

Graves, a nursing home administrator from Connecticut now living at Smith Mountain Lake, was attracted to the facility that offered assisted living and skilled care because “it was small, and it was affordable. The building itself was in remarkable condition.”

The 48-bed capacity has remained unchanged, but the facility’s primary focus has shifted. “We are the area’s leader for Alzheimer’s care,” said Graves, explaining that 17 of the 50 employees are certified dementia practitioners who have undergone special training

Face it, tanning can

Face it, tanning can be a lot of fun, and there’s nothing more beautiful and a golden, bronzed body! If you like tanning, then it is advisable to purchase the best tanning lotion or tanning bed lotions on the market. One company that offers a great tanning lotion is a company called Bullfrog. They offer a complete line now in tanning bed lotions and sunless tanning products that will protect you from harmful rays and skin cancer. If you enjoy being outdoors, regardless of whether it’s golfing, boating, fishing or whatever sport you enjoy, it is important to purchase the right product that will protect you from UVA rays.

Many tanning lotions on the market have great staying power and will give you protection for up to eight hours or longer. Whether it is a cream or lotion, you can go for most of the day without concerning yourself about a reapplication. If you have a problem with excessive perspiration, there are a lot of manufacturers that make no-drip products and Bullfrog is one of them. Or, if you spend time on a tanning bed at home or use a commercial booth, you should, as well, purchase a quality product for your own protection.

If you have kids that like to spend the day in the sunshine, there are many tanning lotions that are excellently-scented and non-greasy that are excellent for use on children.

Community spirit makes fete biggest and best yet [Edition 3]

0 Comments | West Briton, The; Truro (UK), Jul 22, 2010

MORE THAN 150 people visited Cury Primary School’s annual fete, which raised Pounds 849.

Revellers on the school field enjoyed a selection of stalls offering cakes, refreshments, books, toys, bric-a-brac and a raffle.

People from outside the school also booked pitches for stalls offering toys, jewellery and fudge, among other things.

The RNLI brought a boat along to display and the children enjoyed a bouncy castle.

Music and entertainment came from a samba band and the school’s own singers, dancers and fife players.

The money went to the parents and friends of the school who organised the event and who plan to use the funds raised on playground equipment.

New hymn books have also been bought.

Head teacher Jean Whetham said: “It was certainly bigger and better than any we’ve had before. It was a really good day and showed the true community in this area as we had many people come who didn’t even have children in the school.”

Flintstones-themed team rally round to help raise cash for air

0 Comments | Derby Evening Telegraph, Jul 24, 2010

A TEAM of four have set off on a 2,500-mile rally dressed as characters from The Flintstones.

The foursome started the Scally Rally event alongside about 100 cars at Den Haag, in Holland, yesterday.

They expect to finish the challenge in five days and are due to drive through Germany, Denmark, Sweden before finishing in Norway. The team are taking part in a Pounds 100 Volvo S40 decorated like the stone-age car used in the 1960s animation.

Anna Thompstone, retail manager at Burton’s Byrkley Garden Centre, is leading the team, which includes her fiancee Martyn Bell, 37, and friends Richie Roe, 40, and Sarah Norris, 26.

Together, they are raising funds for Midlands Air Ambulance by dressing up as Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty, as well as taking part in the rally.

Anna, who lives on the outskirts of Burton, said the team had hoped to raise Pounds 3,000 for the cause. However that target has been smashed, with more than Pounds 3,600 being pledged so far.

The 26-year-old said: “The Midlands Air Ambulance is a hugely worthwhile charity, yet it receives no funding from the Government or National Lottery.

“Instead they rely on the public and local businesses to raise the Pounds 6 million it needs each year.”

Entrants must purchase a car for under Pounds 100, although they can spend as much as they like doing it up. Anna’s team spent Pounds 150 on giving their vehicle a Flintstones makeover.

Anna said: “We wanted to go with something that caught people’s imagination in the hope that it would help us raise as much money as possible.”

Actually feel them, moment-by-moment in your body.

CALL THEIR BLUFF!.

Sure, you will get the temptation to eat extra – to compensate – to ‘fill’ in the feelings you believe you are now lacking.

These desires are natural, normal.

They are not bad in themselves. And they are ONLY TEMPORARY.

Just feel them! Yes, it takes courage not to run away and try to escape by eating extra.

If you will just have patience and stay with these feelings, you will discover your moment of truth – that these cravings are no big deal and that you can easily handle them.

You don’t have to eat to escape from them.
